About the Code 39 Barcode

The Code 39 barcode belongs to the Linear Codes family. Industrial, automotive, defense. On this page you can generate Code 39 barcodes directly in your browser: enter your data, watch the preview update in real time, then download the finished symbol as PNG or SVG. Rendering happens locally on your device — nothing you type is ever uploaded to a server.

Linear (1D) symbologies encode data in the widths of parallel bars and spaces. They are read left-to-right by laser scanners, CCD readers, and phone cameras, and they need a clear quiet zone on both sides so the reader can locate the start and stop patterns. Linear codes hold little data — usually a short reference number — which is exactly why they remain the standard for product and asset identification.

Code 39 codes are used for inventory and asset labels, shipping references, library cards, and equipment tags. Because the data is fixed inside the symbol at generation time, a printed Code 39 barcode keeps working indefinitely — there is no service behind it, no expiry date, and no per-scan fee.

Is the Code 39 barcode generator free?

Yes. You can generate and download Code 39 barcodes for free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Generation runs entirely in your browser — your data is never uploaded.

What data can I encode in a Code 39 barcode?

Uppercase A-Z, 0-9 and - . $ / + % SPACE. For example: ABC123. If your data does not match the expected format, the encoder will show an error instead of producing a symbol that cannot scan.

Which download formats are supported?

PNG for screens and documents, and SVG for unlimited-quality print and design work. Both formats are rendered locally in your browser.

Does a Code 39 barcode expire?

No. The barcode is a fixed image of the data you entered — it keeps scanning for as long as the print or display lasts. If your data changes, simply generate a new barcode.
