Weighted GPA (Honors)

What is the standard GPA scale?

On the standard 4.0 scale, A+ and A both count as 4.0, A- as 3.7, B+ as 3.3, B as 3.0, B- as 2.7, C+ as 2.3, C as 2.0, C- as 1.7, D+ as 1.3, D as 1.0, D- as 0.7, and F as 0.0.

How is GPA calculated?

GPA = (sum of grade-point × credit-hours) ÷ (sum of credit-hours). Each course contributes its grade-point value multiplied by the number of credits, and the total is divided by the total credits attempted.

What is a weighted GPA?

A weighted GPA adds a +1 bonus (per credit) to honors, AP, or IB courses. On a 4.0 scale the bonus is capped at 4.0; on a 5.0 scale the cap is 5.0 — so an A in an AP course counts as 5.0 on the 5.0 scale.

What is the difference between the 4.0 and 5.0 weighted scale?

The 5.0 scale lets an honors/AP A count as 5.0 (the full +1 bonus), while the 4.0 scale still caps every grade at 4.0. Many U.S. high schools use the 5.0 scale for honors, while most colleges use the 4.0 scale.

Are course names required?

No. Course name is optional — it only helps you keep track of which row is which. Grades and credit hours are what actually drive the GPA.
