Highlighted rows are the brackets your taxable income falls into. Only the portion of income in each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

Estimate only. Federal income tax — does not include FICA (Social Security/Medicare ~7.65%), state tax, or tax credits. The 2024 tax brackets are for tax year 2024 (filed in 2025). Consult a tax professional for advice specific to your situation.

2024 Federal Brackets

Uses the official 2024 IRS seven-bracket progressive system (10/12/22/24/32/35/37%) with thresholds for all four filing statuses embedded inline — no API, no lookup.

Four Filing Statuses

Switch between Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, and Head of Household. Each has its own bracket thresholds and standard deduction.

Effective vs Marginal

See both rates: effective rate is your overall tax ÷ gross income; marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar earned — the bracket your top dollar falls into.

Standard or Custom

Use the 2024 standard deduction for your status automatically, or enter a custom deduction amount (itemized, business, adjustments to income, etc).

How is the federal income tax calculated?

The US uses a progressive bracket system. Each chunk of your taxable income is taxed at the rate for the bracket it falls in. For a single filer with $50,000 taxable income in 2024: 10% on the first $11,600 ($1,160) + 12% on $11,600–$47,150 ($4,266) + 22% on $47,150–$50,000 ($629) = $6,055 total tax. The result is not "22% of $50,000" — only the top chunk is taxed at 22%.

What is the difference between effective and marginal rate?

Your effective rate is total tax ÷ gross income — the average rate you actually pay. Your marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar earned, which is the bracket your top income dollar falls into. The marginal rate matters for deciding if extra work or a side gig is "worth it".

What filing status should I pick?

Single (unmarried); Married Filing Jointly (you and spouse combined income, usually lower tax); Married Filing Separately (you and spouse file separately, often higher tax but useful in specific situations); Head of Household (unmarried, pays more than half cost of keeping up a home for a qualifying person — lower tax than Single).

Does this include state tax, FICA, or credits?

No. This calculator estimates federal income tax only — it does not include Social Security/Medicare (FICA, ~7.65% for employees), state income tax, or tax credits like the Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Credit. Your actual take-home pay will be lower after FICA and (if applicable) state tax.

What are the 2024 standard deductions?

Single and Married Filing Separately: $14,600. Married Filing Jointly: $29,200. Head of Household: $21,900. The calculator selects the right standard deduction automatically based on your filing status. Use "Custom" if you itemize deductions or have adjustments to income.
