What is the difference between Oil, Watercolor, and Impasto?
Oil uses a simplified Kuwahara filter — it groups nearby pixels by brightness into 8 bins and averages the dominant bucket, creating smooth color blocks with preserved edges. Watercolor applies a separable box blur and reduces saturation to ~70% for a soft, washy look. Impasto runs the same Kuwahara as Oil and then adds a subtle canvas grain overlay (per-pixel random noise ±15) for a thick-paint texture.
How does the brush size slider work?
For Oil and Impasto it is the Kuwahara neighborhood radius — larger values produce more abstract, blockier strokes. For Watercolor it is the box-blur radius. Range is 2–20 px; default is 8.
Does my image leave my device?
No. All processing happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to a server.
Why is the preview capped at 800–1200px?
The Kuwahara filter is O(width × height × radius²), so for Oil and Impasto the working canvas is capped at 800px on the long side. Watercolor uses a fast separable box blur, so it gets a larger 1200px cap. After processing, the small canvas is upscaled back to your original resolution (capped at 4096px) with high-quality smoothing.
