Markup vs Margin
The two are different: markup is profit ÷ cost, margin is profit ÷ revenue. A 50% markup is only a 33% margin. This tool shows both so you price correctly.

What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit ÷ cost. Margin is profit ÷ selling price (revenue). A 50% markup on a $100 cost gives a $150 selling price, $50 profit. The markup is 50/100 = 50%. But the margin is 50/150 = 33%. They describe the same dollar profit from different bases.
How is selling price calculated from cost and markup %?
Selling price = cost × (1 + markup/100). For example, a $50 cost at 60% markup → $50 × 1.60 = $80 selling price. Profit = $80 − $50 = $30. Margin = $30 ÷ $80 = 37.5%.
What is "keystone" pricing?
Keystone is retail shorthand for a 100% markup — doubling the cost. A $40 item is sold for $80. The markup is 100%; the margin is 50%. Many retailers use keystone as a default pricing rule.
Why does my margin not equal my markup?
Because they have different denominators. Margin is always smaller than markup for the same profit. 50% margin requires a 100% markup; 50% markup produces only 33% margin. Always confirm which one a contract or vendor means.
