Checkout-Ready Output
Clean dollar output for tax amount and grand total. Use it for receipts, expense reports, budgeting, or splitting the bill at checkout.
How is sales tax added to a price?
Multiply the pre-tax amount by the rate (as a decimal) to get the tax, then add it to the pre-tax amount. For example, $100 × 7.25% = $7.25 tax → total $107.25. Equivalently, total = pre-tax × (1 + rate/100).
How do I reverse a sales tax from a total?
Divide the total by (1 + rate/100) to get the pre-tax amount, then subtract to get the tax. For example, $107.25 total at 7.25% tax → $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100 pre-tax, $7.25 tax. This recovers the original sticker price.
Do the quick state buttons include local taxes?
No. The preset rates are base state rates only (CA 7.25%, NY 8%, TX 6.25%, FL 6%). Cities and counties often add on top — California localities can reach 10%+ and New York City ~8.875%. Use the slider or input to enter the combined rate.
Why do some states have no sales tax?
Five US states have no state-level sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. (Alaska allows local sales taxes.) Many other countries have a VAT (value-added tax) instead — the math is the same; just use the country's rate.
