EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is data embedded in JPEG photos by your camera or phone. It can include the camera make and model, the exact date and time the photo was taken, exposure settings, and — most importantly for privacy — GPS coordinates showing exactly where the photo was taken. Stripping EXIF before sharing photos online protects your location, identity, and device info.

The tool draws your image onto an HTML5 <canvas> at its original dimensions (capped at 4096px for mobile safety) and re-encodes the pixel data with your chosen format via canvas.toBlob(). The Canvas API stores ONLY pixel data — it never carries EXIF, GPS, IPTC, or XMP from the source. So the output blob is guaranteed metadata-free.

No. All processing happens in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded to any server, never stored, never logged. The tool works offline once the page is loaded.

All three options produce metadata-free output. PNG and WebP never carry EXIF by design. JPG re-encode strips EXIF naturally because the Canvas JPG encoder writes a minimal JFIF header with no APP1 segment. Pick JPG for photos (smallest size), PNG for screenshots or images with transparency (lossless), WebP for the best size-to-quality ratio on modern browsers.

Yes. GPS coordinates are stored inside the EXIF block (in the GPS IFD). Because the canvas re-encode drops the entire EXIF block, GPS data is removed along with everything else. The tool also surfaces a "GPS Location" badge in the detected-fields list when GPS is present, so you can confirm it is being stripped.

Re-encoding with a different format or quality setting can produce a larger file (e.g. converting a heavily-compressed JPG to lossless PNG). The metadata itself is tiny (usually under 64KB), so any size change comes from the re-encode, not the metadata removal. The size comparison shown in the UI reflects the real cleaned blob size.
