EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is the metadata block embedded in JPEG photos by digital cameras and phones. It records the camera make & model, lens, focal length, aperture (f-number), shutter speed (exposure time), ISO speed, flash mode, orientation sensor, the exact date & time the photo was taken, and (if your camera has GPS) the latitude/longitude of where the photo was shot. This tool decodes all of it inline.

PNG and WebP files almost never carry EXIF (PNG stores metadata in its own chunks, not in a JPEG APP1 segment). JPEGs that have been re-saved through most image editors, social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp), or batch-resize tools are routinely stripped of EXIF for privacy. Try a JPEG straight from the camera or phone gallery.

The file is read as an ArrayBuffer. The parser walks the JPEG marker stream to find the APP1 segment (marker 0xFFE1) carrying the "Exif\0\0" magic, then descends into the TIFF header — reading byte order ("II" little-endian or "MM" big-endian), the 0x002A magic, and the first Image File Directory. Each IFD entry is 12 bytes (tag + type + count + value/offset). The parser follows the Exif sub-IFD pointer (tag 0x8769) and GPS sub-IFD pointer (tag 0x8825) and decodes every entry. All wrapped in try/catch so corrupt EXIF never crashes the page.
